All Deviations

Gate your cats, the old bird said.
So I put them in
radio collars, inside
when it rained, and my house filled
with death moans and hissing.
They crawl like spiders, these cats.
Up curtains and sweaters,
writhing and miserable, eels
in unhappiness.
I blamed the bird,
an angry neighbor hell
bent on proving the need
for fenced yards, or simply unfond
of animalistic affection.

Chest-deep in cat soup,
wild sirens bothersome
and wailing foul murder.
But the rain won’t let up
as slick drips dropping smatter
cat-laden sills, and the bird,
still useless in water,
watches from his modified
duplex. I shut the curtains—
damn that bird.
Damn the cats, too.
They are angry, and hungry,
and parasitic. And the radio collars
might be scrambling their little brains.

The bird is molting.
I can see when he leaves
the duplex, brown plumage
tinted grey, stuffed into Hefty bags.
He drags them through the flood
to rot on the sidewalk.
With any luck, he’s losing
more than feathers.

I freed the cats.
They had turned
ravenous, nibbling on my toes
when they thought I wouldn’t miss them.
The cat dam broken,
they spread and spill
as whitewater and fury over
soaked grass, towards the featherbags.
And somehow they must have caught
the scent of secondaries
through his open window.
They find a whole room
of feather-rain smell.

The bird came home
to cat soup
waiting
for a side of finch.

Wasn't going to upload any more poetry, as I don't think many people get my particular brand of it. But I figured I'd see what kind of feedback I can get on this. I'm turning it into a short story as well.

Think Aimee Bender meets Raymond Carver.

Comments are much appreciated.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Reminds me of your cats back in Mtown. Too many of them.

Miss you! Whar has you been lately?

Awesome freaking comment. You have no idea how thrilled I get when I see these kinds of comments. And from mah GUUUURL.

I have one cat. She's adorable, and awful. She demands attention in the most obnoxious ways... harrassing day and night, it's really unbelievable. She seems like five cats, or twenty, all yowling and moaning and writhing, she's everywhere and oozing when she cries. And when it rains she's worse, climbing up the walls, anxious and dire, and I hate her so effing much.

That's where the inspiration for the behavior of the cats comes from. The story, though, was in the first line, which came in a moment of absurdity in the middle of poetry class. The first stanza came pretty quickly after that. :) Still working on the last few stanzas. :3

Uhhhh clarification: Awesome, because you used "imagery" and "line breaks" and "flow," to describe. XD Not just cause you liked it. X3
